Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a licensed Ham radio operator?
Yes, all ARES members must hold an FCC issued amateur radio license. A Technician class license is sufficient although members are encouraged to upgrade to General or Extra class licenses.
Do I need an expensive radio or a lot of gear?
No, the bare minimum radio needed is a dual band HT with an upgraded or mobile antenna. Mobile radios (50W), DMR and HF radios are encouraged for better results and flexibility.
All members are also required to have a uniform shirt, high-viz jacket, vest and cap for deployments.
Is there any training for members?
Nassau County ARES offers its members the tools and opportunities to enhance their skills as amateur radio operators by providing monthly training sessions on the second Thursday of each month. We encourage our members to pursue additional certifications by attending special classes on EMCOMM and FEMA ICS.
Are ARES members required to be ARRL members?
No, all licensed amateur radio operators are welcome as ARES members. ARRL membership is required for leadership positions however.
Do I have to attend all the meetings, nets and events?
No. We realize that free time is scarce these days. Most of our meetings are hybrid – Zoom and in-person to accommodate as many as possible.
Participation in our weekly nets (voice and digital) is encouraged to maintain and improve operating skills as.
Participation in one or two weekend events or drill is also required each year.
Besides radio, how members keep in touch?
ARES Members MUST join the e-mail based https://NassauCountyARES.groups.io (link in footer too).
This is the primary method used to contact members with alerts, updates, notices and important documents.
